Miles Markmann

Mr. Miles was born in Germany and raised in Los Angeles, CA.  He is now a senior completing his undergraduate studies in chemistry at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  There he has investigated the synthesis of thermally-responsive, hyperbranched copolymers via copper catalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP), and the synthesis of radical, difunctional initiator-monomers, cross-linkers, and inimers with rehealable capabilities; based upon Diels-Alder chemistry; under the guidance of Professor Philip J. Costanzo.  Miles presented his research at a seminar during the 249th ACS meeting in Denver, CO.  He is also involved in chemical education research; investigating the effects studio-style classes and learning assistants have on general chemistry students; under the supervision of Professor Alan Kiste and Professor Gregory Scott.  Miles joined the Hawker Group at the University of California, Santa Barbara as a RISE research intern in the Summer of 2015.
